Cameronians War Memorial
From Glasgow
This bronze memorial was unveiled on the 9th of August 1924 by Lord Provost John Johnson.
Sculptor: Philip Lindsey Clark.
The memorial is located inside Kelvingrove Park in front of the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. It commemorates the men who died in two world wars, detailing the battles in which they were involved on the rearside of the monument.
The Cameronians Regiment, eventually disbanded in 1959, was named after the Covenanter supporters of Richard Cameron and were recruited from the Lanarkshire area.
[edit] Inscriptions
The most prominent inscription on the front of the memorial reads:
To the glorious memory of all ranks
the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) who
to uphold liberty and justice in the world
laid down their lives in the two world wars
1914-1918 and 1939 - 1945
An inscription on the side:
O valiant hearts, who to your glory came
Through dust of conflict and thro' battle flame;
Tranquil you lie, your knightly virtue proved
Your memory hallowed in the land you loved
[edit] Modifications
In 1947 the inscription was altered to include a commemoration of those who died in the Second World War and in 1968 a tablet was added to mark the disbandment of the regiment.
